Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task - William James I had been procrastinating this post for months now. To avoid finding myself fretting about it tonight also before pulling into the warmth of the comforter, I decided to complete it today. Few months ago, we found ourselves literally up the creek without a paddle in a totally new land - "The U.S of A" I don't deny that every single procedure for a newcomer is well formulated & neatly structured. It may seem pretty organized for an outsider until one lands up here. The problem is every activity ends up in a deadlock state as they are all tightly knit together. We had wished quite often that we had all the information handy at a single location. How we wished someone would tell us the sequence in which to get our things done & feel 'settled! It was then that I decided to make it available as a post for people who might need it in the future.

| Vaaranam Aayiram - Review |

Want me to tell you the story in three simple words? " My daddy strongest!"
Vaaranam Aayiram - An exquisite narration of a small, lovely, educated middle-class family life in Southern India. It carries a simple, straight message - "Whatever happens, life must move on". It is a common man's biography. Not all in the audience group will be able to relate the incidents quoted in the movie to the past situations in their own lives.
Read somewhere that this movie is a tribute by Gautam to his father who passed away recently.
It is a beautiful composition but all along the movie I missed the "Gautam" stamp on it. Anyone who closely watches his movies can easily synthesize a pattern but this one stands out from the rest. I also strongly doubt if it would reach all classes of people - most of the dialogues were in English.
The movie revolves entirely around Surya- the father & the son. The movie does not portray anything special to mould the character "Krishnan" to be accepted as a very inspiring personality though the word "inspiring" / "inspiration" is heard quite often in the movie. Krishnan as a person was lucky enough to have a successful love life but does that alone qualify to mark him as a "hero" in the eyes of his children? Will love at first sight work so good for everyone?
Surya has done a stunning performance. He has done a lot of home work for the film and that has rewarded him well. He is an apt fit for both the roles & looks great on screen(except for the biceps & triceps looking odd on a terminally ill person's hands)
Simran has played her role well and her learnings as an actress shows up even on those few scenes given to her. Shreya's(Screen name) & Divya Spandana's(alias Ramya) characters were more like side roles. Sameera Reddy - yet another new face. It is high time that directors must start to realize that people do not demand to see new faces everytime but look forward to see actors/actresses who can paint the feelings from within rather than rely completely on the strength of dialogues.
The songs have definitely made a major hit at the box office but they failed to set the demarcation between the 1980s and 2000s. The tunes have seeded a very wrong expectation. If the audio release had not happened earlier, may be the expectations could have differed.
The duo Gautam & Harris Jeyaraj have announced formal partnership break-up. Wondering if that decision played a role causing a wider gap between the screenplay and music.
"Mundhinam paarthene" song had laid more expectation in the minds of audience but was disappointing on screen. The picturization failed all the justice that Naresh Iyer had made to the song.
For any fan of Gautam Menon, atleast a few dialogues would remain evergreen on their minds but for this movie it may not be so. I simply couldn't digest one dialogue.
Surya to Divya Spandana: Nee nadanthu varratha(varuvathai) paarthappo thaan, unna naan evalavu miss panninenu therinjuthu. Nee saree kattitu vanthathaala itha naan sollalai.
I felt terribly disappointed hearing this:(
Dialogues are repeated very often. Few samples here:
"I'm in love with you"
"Love and not lust"
"Swept me off my feet"
"Vaaranam Aayiram" intended to mean "(With the might of) thousand elephants".
Relevance to the context of the movie:
A depiction of how a father imbibes the strength of thousand elephants in his son's heart and helps him stand against all ordeals & remains as an inspiring soul in his heart forever
On a lighter note, I am curious to know if people who protested against Khushboo for her comments on premarital safe-sex will now hold banners against Gautam & Surya :P
Mr. Gautam Vasudev Menon - Not that you did a bad job, but considering your brilliance, more was expected from you.

Isn't it so stupid to wish to see oil & water blended together so well without showing any differences amongst the two.......
Inspite of using any trendy or super cool beater, with pass of time, differences are definitely bound to show up. That is what is called the "property" / "characteristics", isn't it ?
